Where do the Hamptons begin? And end? At the Shinnecock Canal? Is Westhampton part of the Hamptons? How about Montauk?
The phrase “the Hamptons” was originally used in a book called The New Long Island: A Handbook of Summer Travel, which was a promotional piece from the Long Island Rail Road published in 1879. It’s fairly clear that back then, Westhampton was most definitely considered part of the Hamptons, and the Shinnecock Canal had nothing to do with it, probably because the canal didn’t exist then.
But that was then, this is now, so we’re putting it up to a vote. As always, if you have something to say, let us know in the comments!
