John McEnroe Sells His Southampton Estate with Ocean Access and Tennis

We’d thought, “You’re leaving the Hamptons, John? You cannot be serious!” when tennis great McEnroe and wife Patty Smyth (singer for Scandal) listed their Squabble Lane home just about a year ago. The property, repped by Kathy Konzet at Sotheby’s, asked a fairly reasonable $14.5 million then; in November, the price was cut $2 million to $12.5 million, which seems to have done the trick in eliciting an offer as the property is now in contract. It doesn’t hurt that Squabble Lane is one of the best addresses in the Hamptons, of course.

The property is famously the only one of McEnroe’s houses to boast a tennis court; it also offers coveted deeded ocean access. There’s 2.17 acres of land, with of course a gunite pool as well. The house, which is large at 7500 square feet, boasts 8 bedrooms and 7.5 baths. We’re guessing the new owners will renovate if not raze the house: the kitchen is small and closed off for current tastes, but looks like an easy problem to solve.

Guess they are serious.
