The East End is lucky enough to boast some of the most beautiful residential real estate in the world. And the best way to experience it, we think, is via a house tour. This Saturday, August 3rd, it’s Shelter Island’s turn to show off some of its finest houses. From 2PM to 5PM, enjoy the tour put on by the Shelter Island Historical Society, which will feature innovative contemporary architecture as well as sensitive historic restoration.

An open house for tour participants will be held afterwards, from 4:30PM to 6:00PM, at the newly constructed Shelter Island History Center.

Many of the houses on the tour have been featured in Architectural Digest, The New York Times, and Cottages & Gardens. So now let’s get to the eye candy. It’s hot out, so you want to see a fabulous pool house? On this tour you’ll see these two beauties:

Above, one room of the pool house has folding doors that open onto a cedar deck, while the other side is devoted to private meditation and yoga.

Above is known as the “Eco House.”  t relies on solar power for all electricity (including powering the owners’ electric car).  Landscaping connects the house with the wooded hillside; a small vineyard separates the house from the road below, and there’s a garden on the roof of the main house.

The house above was custom designed by architects for a family with small children, and takes maximum advantage of its site overlooking a meadow.

Another house (not pictured) is  a Victorian house on a double lot in Shelter Island Heights. It recently restored to pristine condition by its owner. Great care was used to restore the fine woodworking details, inside and out, and the house is decorated in a classic summer cottage style.

Sounds good? Tickets are $50.00 per person in advance or $55.00 per person day of. Tickets can be purchased online at www.shelterislandhistorical.org. For more information, call 631-749-0025 or email info@shelterislandhistorical.org.
